Nazrul Islam

Md Nazrul Islam holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Hong Kong and an MSc in Community Health and Health Management from Heidelberg University in Germany. With over twenty years of teaching and research experience, he has worked at various universities across Asia, Germany, Canada, and Australia. His research expertise spans Asian philosophy, Asian medicine (including TCM and Ayurveda), South Asian history, and China’s Belt and Road Initiative. He is the author or editor of six books, as well as numerous journal articles and book chapters.

Burkhard Jahnicke

Dr Burkhard Jahnicke is an independent scholar who is passionate about history. He has an MA in history, politics and law and a PhD in history from Hamburg University, Germany. Burkhard has taught courses at German and Australian universities on twentieth-century European and American history, as well as special courses on intelligence and the history of terrorism. He has published widely, especially on topics related to German foreign policy and intelligence history. Burkhard is a former Executive Director of the International Intelligence History Association. He has been teaching at WEA since 2013.

Irene Jimenez Calderon

Irene Jiménez, MA in Teaching and Degree in Linguistics and Applied Languages, brings over a decade of Spanish language teaching experience from Spain to the United Kingdom and Australia. With a profound passion for linguistics and language education, she has developed a strong proficiency in both curriculum development and student engagement. Her teaching style combines dynamic instruction with a patient, tailored approach, effectively accommodating students ranging from beginner (A1) to advanced (C1) levels. Irene's methods focus on active learning and cultural immersion, fostering a classroom environment that is both interactive and inclusive. She believes in the transformative power of education to bridge linguistic and cultural barriers, making language learning a pivotal and enriching experience for her students.

Lu is a Life Coach, Neuro Semantics Trainer, Enneagram Facilitator and Practice Group Leader trained in the techniques of Spring Forest Qigong, and has led sessions in Nepal, Kazakhstan, Western Australia, NSW and online with many years' experience helping people break free from barriers and leading them towards a journey of success and personal evolution. She facilitates a compassionate, non-judgemental and honest environment to allow space for her clients to access their personal power to live life fully and transform their potential into reality. Mohamad is a business and technology consultant who has worked in a wide array of commercial, tertiary and semi-government enterprises. His interests are in the simplification and practical use of technology and in improving business through simple, innovate marketing ideas. His training interests focus on sales and marketing, technology and business disciplines. In his spare time Mohamad is a keen cactus plant grower and enjoys cooking and movies.

Sigrid Kaly

Sigrid Kaly was born and educated in Germany, where she obtained various diplomas from language schools as interpreter/translator. She came to Australia in 1957 and worked for 20 years as liaison officer, translator and interpreter for two German doctors and their Australian patients. In 1988, she obtained NAATI accreditation as a two-way translator Level III (German/English), as well as a Certificate of TESOL from Sydney TAFE in 1989. Sigrid has been teaching languages to adults on a part-time basis since 1985 and has been with WEA Sydney since 1987.

Hasan Kamali

Hasan Kamali is an Arabic language teacher with degrees in Interpreting & Translation (University of Western Sydney) and Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (London Metropolitan University, Distinction). He has extensive experience teaching adult learners in Australia and overseas. Hasan’s classes are engaging and supportive, with a strong focus on practical communication, cultural understanding, and constructive assessment.
