WEA Sydney is an independent not-for-profit organisation, whose sole aim is the provision of educational courses and activities for its students. Largely self-funded through the fees that it charges for its courses, WEA Sydney attempts to keep these fees to the lowest level possible, and to offer extensive concessions for the elderly and for social security beneficiaries.

The democratic and voluntary traditions of the WEA have created an approach that is unique in adult education. The WEA believes that education can contribute to the creation of a more democratic and just society.

WEA’s ability to involve students in their own learning has long been admired as has our willingness to contribute to educational debates. Whilst WEA Sydney offers a whole range of educational and training activities it has maintained its unique identity as a provider of courses in the humanities, arts and social sciences.

WEA Sydney Council

Since its foundation in 1913, the WEA has been governed democratically by its students and members through the WEA Board and Council. Why not become an active participant in this unique educational institution?

Council welcomes new members to its monthly meetings. Members of the Council & Board work closely with the professional Officers and staff in ensuring the smooth organisation of the WEA, and in promoting its work. Council also offers vital input into the courses that WEA offers.

Any student enrolled in a current WEA class may nominate themselves at any time during the year as a student representative on the Council. Council meetings are held at 5.30pm on the third Friday of each month at WEA Sydney.

If you become a Student or Member Representative and attend any three Council Meetings you will receive a Course Enrolment Voucher worth $90. Attend more meetings and gain more vouchers!

If you would like to join the WEA Sydney Council, please download and fill out the Council Representative Nomination Form.

This public contribution is an important source of financial support for WEA Sydney. All donations go directly to WEA Sydney’s educational activities, enabling our courses to be presented in the best possible setting and supported by its own research and lending library. WEA Sydney is committed to offering its students the best value possible, and your help through a small donation adds significantly to this objective.
