Mastering drapery, enables one to describe folds and shade form, in both Still Life and figurative compositions. It is significant for gaining competence in the foundational skills of shading, which can then be applied to other aspects of drawing, such as the human figure, landscape and Still Life. By studying drapery, one thus gains skills that assist a drawing practice at every single level.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Drapery and its basic geometric form – drawing and shading bent and distorted cylinders.
  • Drapery and light (on both white and coloured papers) – Students will bring in a cardboard box and attach a piece of drapery to its inside, in order to draw drapery that allows for an examination of lost and found edges under controlled lighting.
  • Andrea del Sarto and figure studies in drapery: We will examine an Italian Florentine artist and his use of sanguine red chalk in drawing drapery.
  • Drapery and the life model: We will examine and draw two outfits on the life model.
  • Undulating drapery and embodied emotion – Looking at the drawings and works of the Italian artists Correggio, Barocci and Bernini, we will drape mannequins in cloth dipped in a plaster solution, then draw them from multiple angles.
  • Drapery and pattern – We will look at the work of Paolo Veronese, to see how an artist describes patterned drapery, without abandoning its underlying form.
  • Drapery and composition – How drapery is employed across a drawn design.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Have a broad knowledge of the depiction and employment of drapery within the visual arts.
  2. Perceive of drapery in derivative terms, of basic cylindrical geometric shapes.
  3. Apply drapery to Still Life, the human figure and composition broadly.
  4. Gain skills in shading and describing form that cross over into all areas of empirically observed and conceived objects.

MATERIALS LIST

  • Sanguine red chalk (oiled based hard e.g. PITT Faber Castel)
  • Black chalk pencil (oiled based hard e.g. PITT Faber Castel)
  • White chalk pencil
  • A3 sketch book
  • A few sheets of A4 blue-grey or dark buff paper
  • Stanley knife
  • Kneadable eraser
  • 2x large bulldog clips
  • 1x watercolour round head brush. Size 6 to 8
  • 2x paper stumps

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials.
