Discover linocut and relief printmaking in a supportive, hands-on course suitable for complete beginners and returning students. Learn how to design, carve, ink and hand-print relief images without the need for a printing press while exploring the materials, tools and processes used in this versatile art form.
No previous printmaking experience is required. Beginners can build their skills from the fundamentals, while returning students can continue developing their practice through techniques such as monoprinting, overlays, stencilling and reduction printing. As students become increasingly confident and independent in their work, the tutor can advise when they may be ready to progress to Linocut Relief Printing Without a Press for Continuers.

MATERIALS LIST
- Speedball relief print cutting tools or similar
- 3 x A4 approximately sized vinyl or lino print tiles (vinyl tiles are softer to cut)
- $5 at the start of term to contribute towards class inks, papers, rollers and other shared materials
IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
COURSE OUTLINE
- Introduction to the principles and processes of linocut and relief printmaking
- Designing and carving images for relief printing
- Inking and hand-printing relief images without a printing press
- Selecting suitable paper, lino or vinyl, cutting tools, inks, rollers and brayers
- Developing confidence in planning and producing individual relief prints
- For returning students, extending existing skills through techniques such as monoprinting, overlays, stencilling and reduction printing
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Design, carve and hand-print relief images using appropriate linocut techniques and tools.
- Select suitable materials and processes for producing relief prints without a printing press.
- Apply printmaking techniques appropriate to their level of experience with increasing confidence and independence.
