Known as the Knights Templar, they were among the wealthiest and most powerful of the Western Christian military orders and were prominent in Christian finance. The organisation existed for nearly two centuries during the Middle Ages: 1118 - 1314. We look at the origins of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and theTemplars, the importance of pilgrims in the Holy Land, the effects of the Crusades and how the area once known as Outremer became the battle ground between Christian and Muslim armies.
