Language Course Levels - CEFR Guide
Find the Right Language Course for You
Not sure which level to enrol in? WEA Sydney uses the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to help you identify the course that best matches your skills and learning goals. Choosing the right level ensures you get the most out of your classes, whether you’re learning a language for travel, work, or personal enrichment.
Why CEFR Matters
The CEFR is an internationally recognised framework for measuring language proficiency. It allows students to:
- Accurately assess their current language level
- Progress in a structured and achievable way
- Understand what skills they will develop at each stage
CEFR Language Levels
Basic User (Beginner)
- A1 – Understand and use basic phrases, introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions
- A2 – Handle simple, routine tasks, describe your background, participate in simple conversations
Independent User (Intermediate)
- B1 – Deal with familiar situations, express opinions, narrate experiences, understand main points of standard texts
- B2 – Participate in discussions on a wide range of topics, understand detailed texts, write clearly
Proficient User (Advanced)
- C1 – Understand complex texts, use language flexibly for academic and professional purposes, express ideas fluently
If you’re unsure of your level, WEA tutors can help you select the course that best suits your current abilities and learning goals.
