Shaila Akhter

Resume

Dr. Shaila Akhter has done an MPhil and a PhD in Astrophysics and has around 10 years of teaching experience in University Physics and Astronomy at UNSW. She has conducted extensive physics and astronomy (telescope and planetarium) outreach to all kind of audiences in Sydney, Australian Museum, and many rural areas of Australia, including events such as National science week. She also has served as an international podcaster for Astronomy representing Australia for the first time to the international community through “365 Days of Astronomy Podcast” run by CosmoQuest, in the year of light, each of which reached at least 10K listeners. She has a keen interest on star formation, interstellar medium, and Galactic dynamics and structure in our galaxy, the Milky Way. She has a passionate, supportive, enthusiastic and constructive teaching style. She is easy going and can motivate her students grow interest in the subject matter. In her opinion: "you can reach your dream if you invest your genuine passion and hard work."

Pilar Alejandro

Pilar is a qualified teacher specialising in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language (MA Nebrija University, Spain). Pilar holds a Bachelor of Education from the Sacred Heart University (Perú) and a Master of Philosophy from the University of Sydney.  Pilar has been teaching the Spanish language and cultures from beginner to advanced levels, as well as Spanish cultures for more than ten years in Australia. She has experiences as a Spanish language and culture academic coordinator (USYD Cce), curriculum developer, learner designer of online and face to face language and cultures courses, lecturer and researcher at university level. Pilar has been working at Macquarie University in the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies. She has also worked at the University of Technology Sydney, and the University of Sydney. During her time as a lecturer, Pilar has received a teaching award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to teaching and student learning at Macquarie University.

Frank Amati

Resume

Frank Amati BA (Hons), MA (Hons) has taught in the field of Classics and Ancient History for almost forty years and has taught at the WEA for the last four years. Frank has a keen interest in ancient philosophy and the development of Latin literature up to the time of the Renaissance. His long experience in teaching has not prevented him from trying new methodologies that suit different students of different ages and backgrounds. One of his major aims has been to engender in students a love of ancient literature and its still relevant impact on modern thought. Feedback from students has always been an essential element of his teaching, which allows his interactions to develop both enthusiasm and pleasure.

Graeme Aplin

Graeme Aplin, PhD, taught geography at the tertiary level for nearly 40 years and has taught at WEA and U3A more recently. During this time, his interests became increasingly oriented toward environmental and heritage issues. World Heritage is of particular interest. He is deeply concerned about adverse environmental conditions, including climate change, and about endangered species and ecosystems. Community awareness of these issues needs to be increased. Graeme has travelled a lot and has gained much knowledge of many countries.

Kailash Awati

Resume

Kailash Awati has over two decades of experience in helping organisations improve their data and decision-making capabilities. He currently works at an NSW government agency and is also an Adjunct Fellow in Human-Centred AI at UTS.  Apart from his professional work, he has a deep interest in promoting data and AI literacy amongst audiences ranging from curious non-specialists to postgraduate students.  Kailash has written well-regarded books on managing complexity in organisations ( https://www.amazon.com.au/stores/Kailash-Awati/author/B006JSYRCO) and blogs occasionally at Eight to Late (https://eight2late.wordpress.com).

Sharon Baker

Sharon has a Diploma in Western Calligraphy, Certificate IV in Illuminated Calligraphy, Commercial Italic and Historical Calligraphy. She continues to study with many international calligraphers as part of her ongoing learning. She has been teaching in adult education for twenty plus years at Community Colleges. She has developed and run school holiday workshops for children introducing them to the art of calligraphy and its many benefits. Sharon has a comprehensive background in design and layout, watercolour painting, Botanical Art and Chinese Brush painting. Her love of Calligraphy and its history makes her passionate about what she teaches to all.
