The old idea of “retirement” is being challenged as people live longer, stay active for longer and rethink what later life can be. In an interactive talk we will look at what social and mental health researcher/writers Hugh Mackay and Ian Hickie say about new ways to stay active, maintain independence, and nurture both physical and mental wellbeing as we voyage for possibly 30 years of a new age era.

You’ll discuss how older Australians are redefining this life stage, and consider practical ways to support physical health, mental wellbeing, independence and purpose across what may be several more decades of life. An energising course for anyone interested in ageing well, living well and thinking differently about the years ahead.

COURSE OUTLINE

A one & half hour interactive talk and forum over two sessions, about the research, findings, and ideas that three Big researchers have to say about the Quiet New Revolution – the fundamental reshaping of a demeaning social construct ‘Old Age.’ We will look at the principal ideas and suggestions of Australian researcher-writers Hugh Mackay and Ian Hickie; and what a trailblazing woman said 56 years ago – French writer Simone de Beauvoir writes about no longer being visible as an elder woman -  instead treated-viewed as an object - the Social Other  – which still resonates today.

Healthy ageing in Australia is a movement that is not enmeshed in the tentacles of Big business, media corporate elites and advertising execs and salespeople - it focuses upon  healthy wellbeing, active lifestyles, and social connection. And it’s the ‘oldies’ who are paving most of this new trail.

We take a positive look at Unlearning retirement – the components of healthy ageing and healthy living – and ideas emerging from current medical and social research. 
With time for discussion - interchange of ideas and experiences - as we socially connect about our mostly 'privileged' age.
