...A new slant on music of three equally exciting eras: Baroque, Bel Canto and Neo-classical. The repertoire to be explored, both instrumental and vocal, will range from the 17th to the 20th centuries. and will begin with works by Monteverdi, then proceed to works by Vivaldi and his important contemporaries Locatelli, Leclair, Marcello and Cimarosa. The Bel Canto era will be represented by vocal and instrumental works by Donizetti, Bellini, and Verdi, while Neo-classicism will be examined through some of Poulenc’s most charming works, dating from the first half of the 20th century.

- Monteverdi at the court of Mantua and Venice – secular and sacred works
- Vivaldi at the court of Mantua and at Venice – concertos and vocal works
- The concertos of Leclair, Locatelli, Cimarosa and Marcello – France and Italy
- The concertos and operas of Bellini and Donizetti; Verdi’s operas and his String Quartet
- Poulenc – instrumental works – concertos, sonatas and suites
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Distinguish the major stylistic differences between these three contrasting periods
- Appreciate the achievements of the various composers in the different genres in which they composed
- Discuss some of ideas and ideals which inspired the composers
- Outline the extent to which composers responded to the demands of patrons and the music-loving public
