This course is designed to introduce people to the Art of Calligraphy, its rich history and an understanding of the development of our Modern Alphabet. Come and join me on a Celtic Odyssey studying the Uncial Script, its modern application and beautiful decorations. We will start by gaining an understanding of the letter forms working with ink and broad edge nibs. This course is designed for beginners and those wanting to brush up on their skills. A Calligraphy kit will be available for purchase from the tutor for $35 so that correct materials can be purchased. Please note that this is not included in course fees nor is the purchase of this kit compulsory.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to the Uncial Script
  • Continued study of letter form and spacing.
  • Modern Variations of the Uncial Script
  • Working with pen and ink
  • Introduction to Decorative Alphabets and Celtic design

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, student should be able to:

  1. Construct the Uncial script using pen and ink
  2. Achieve spatial awareness
  3. Achieve analytical skills for letter form and shape
  4. Achieve a basic understanding of design skills
  5. Achieve drawn decorative letters and Celtic design

MATERIALS LIST

Students will need to bring a water jar, pencil and ruler. If you do not wish to purchase the kit from the tutor, you will also need to bring the following:

  • Pointed Nib – Zebra or Nikko G
  • Sumi Ink or gouache – black and other colours you may wish to work with
  • A4 bond layout pad

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
