Explore four fascinating ladies of literature and their works: Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, Emily Bronte and Charlotte Bronte. We take two indulgent weeks for each lady of the pen and parasol. Each fortnight we will examine the life and primary work(s) of each lady along with screen adaptations of their novels. Find out why their iconic works are still beloved in the 21st century.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Jane Austen and her novels including Pride and Prejudice, and Sense and Sensibility
  • Mary Shelley and Frankenstein
  • Emily Bronte and Wuthering Heights
  • Charlotte Bronte and Jane Eyre

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Place each novelist and their works within the context of time and society
  2. Understand the techniques and styles of the works of each novelist which makes them iconic
  3. Appreciate the enduring nature of these works
  4. Identify adaptations of the various works.
