This course traces the development of Chinese landscape painting from the late 19th century into the modern era, with a focus on changes after 1949. You’ll see how artists worked between continuity and innovation, retaining key traditions while adapting to new artistic and political conditions.

The course introduces shifts in style such as the growing use of perspective, shadow, colour and reflections, alongside the broader dialogue between inherited Chinese forms and Western influence. A rewarding class for anyone interested in Chinese art, modernism and cultural change.
