Available Classes

This course is an introduction to Russian for any student wishing to learn the language for pleasure, business, travel or everyday use. Students will develop skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing. The communicative “natural” teaching approach of this course will allow students to begin communicating in Russian from the very start. This course also serves as an introduction to Russian society and Russian-speaking cultures. No prior knowledge of the language is required.

TEXTBOOK

  • Tutor supplied material from Troika: A Communicative Approach to Russian Language, Life and Culture, Marita Nummikoski
  • Supplementary material from Russian for Free,  as well as additional materials developed by the tutor, will be provided to students in class.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to the Cyrillic alphabet and Russian pronunciation; basic words
  • Simple greeting phrases; asking yes-or-no questions; asking and answering questions on name, nationality and profession
  • Numbers from 0 to 100; cardinal and ordinal numbers; asking and answering about date and time
  • Taking about one’s family; introducing family members and friends; describing one’s house or apartment
  • Describing one’s city and country; asking for directions; expressing location
  • Vocabulary for travelling on public transport: purchasing tickets, understanding timetable
  • Ordering food and drinks; small conversation about food in cafes and restaurants
  • Communication in cultural places; purchasing tickets for performances; asking and expressing opinions
  • Making comparisons; talking about one’s daily activities in the present tense

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Read and write Cyrillic alphabet.
  2. Introduce and talk about oneself in Russian and exchange basic conversation with others.
  3. Develop basic knowledge of Russian life, society and culture and a greater knowledge and appreciation of the Russian-language speaking world.
  4. Develop the language and general learning skills required for further study of Russian.

LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY

If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
