Practice the art of painting directly from observation in outdoor environments, while developing the ability to see, simplify, and respond creatively to the landscape. Participants will learn how to sketch from deep observation, refine watercolour techniques, minimise unnecessary detail, harmonise shapes and values, and bring vitality to their paintings through confident decision-making.

The course begins with a three-hour studio session focused on composition, visual simplification, and plein air strategies. In the following session, students will paint on location at Hyde Park in Sydney’s CBD, applying concepts learned in the studio. Through demonstration, guided practice, individual feedback, and group discussion, students will gain practical skills and confidence in working outdoors. Students will be encouraged to embrace spontaneity, take creative risks, and develop a personal response to the landscape.

No prior plein air experience is required; however, a basic understanding of watercolour painting is recommended.
