Chicago Blues is the most popular type of Blues Music. It migrated from the rural south to urban Chicago by people who were looking for a better life. This short course will explore its history and the major artists such as Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Sunny Boy Williamson 1 & 2, and Westside Bluesmen such as Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, and Freddie King who were so influential in the development of Rock and Roll and American Popular Music. This will be a memorable evening of great music.
- The transition from the country blues of Mississippi to Chicago; The blues becomes electrified
- The early artists Robert Nighthawk, Sonny Boy Williamson 1 & 2, Big Joe Williams and others
- The Blues band: Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf
- The West Side style: Buddy Guy, Freddie King and Otis Rush
- The modern Chicago Blues, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield and others like BB and Albert King
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Review the history of Chicago Post-War Electric Blues which became part of the British Invasion who took electric blues and made it Blues-Rock.
- Learn the background of the music’s structure and how if evolved from Country Blues, Slide Guitar and solo performers.
- Understand the background of the Blues which led to the Civil Rights Movement and Soul Music.
- Hear and understand the development and styles of the major artists who were the main exponents of this music.
