This course is a continuation from French Elementary 7 and is for any student wishing to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use with approximately 320 hours of French required. Students will develop skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing. This course aims to build general comprehension and communication skills in elementary French and a review of cultural practices, with a focus on clear explanation of higher level language principles.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Talking about the news – Understanding a news article; Use of the passive form to emphasise
  • Understanding a radio interview; Nominalisation of verbs and various uses (headlines..)
  • Debating and discuss a topic; Use of the Gerund form to specify
  • Put forward some ideas - Use of the Conditional tense to suggest actions
  • Street interview – Environment vocabulary; Use of the Subjunctive tense to express wishes and hopes
  • Literary news and awards; Different uses of “on”
  •  Phonetics: Study of specific sounds, rhythm and intonation

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  2. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
  3. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
  4. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY

If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
